Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) or M-number is the unique reference code that identifies your gas meter. The number allows your new gas company to identify your meter easily and quickly.

Usually your MPRN can be found on your bill, and it will look something like this:

Don’t worry, you can get your MPRN somewhere else. You can contact the “M Number Helpline” on 0870 608 1524, they’ll be able to give you your MPRN.

  • Forward the suspicious text to your network provider for free to 7726. If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious;
  • Take a screenshot or screen recording of the text message and send it to the National Cyber Security Centre at ;
  • If you’ve lost money as a result of responding to a suspicious text message: (i) Report to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/contact-us; and (ii) report the fraud to your bank who may be able to recover some of the funds that they released on your behalf; and
  • Review your social media account settings to ensure that your contact details are not openly available to view.
