Our top tips and tricks to get the best value from first-time shopper discounts
- Watch for any minimum spend. For example, with WH Smith there’s no minimum spend to activate your discount, but with River Island you need to spend £50 or more. The discount won’t usually cover any delivery charges.
- Check any time limit on your voucher or discount code. In some cases this could be up to 30 days, so don’t sign up too far in advance.
- The discount may not arrive instantly. Try to sign up a day or two before you plan to shop.
- You can’t usually use it on top of other discounts. Any introductory ‘first time’ discount can usually only be used when buying full-price items. This means you’re unlikely to be able to use first-time buyer discounts during the Boxing Day sales. Or with other voucher codes or coupons.
- Don’t assume a ‘first- timer’ code is always the best deal. It’s worth checking voucher code websites in case there are better seasonal ones out there.
- You don’t always need to be a first-time buyer. Even if you’ve once had one, there’s nothing to stop you signing up again another time if you have a second email address.
- Do be prepared to receive marketing emails. As part of the sign-up process, you’ll usually have to opt-in for emails. It could be worth setting up a new email account when signing up for discounts like this so that your usual email account isn’t overloaded.
